Tekken 2 is the second installment of the popular fighting video game series, Tekken. Developed and published by Namco in 1995 for the arcade machines, it was later ported to the PlayStation a year later, and was a commercial hit, becoming one of the best-selling PlayStation games of the time. In this sequel, the game offers many more options for game modes as well as introduces new famous characters in the series, including Jun Kazama, who would later become the mother of Jin Kazama, another important protagonist in the ever-growing series.

Continuing from the events of the King of Iron Fist Tournament that took place in the first game, Kazuya has finally solidified his claim to the throne of the Mishima Zaibatsu. Allowing the Devil Gene within him to consume him, Kazuya has become ruthless and seeks to eliminate all who stand in the way of expanding the family empire. However, a chance meeting with an animal rights activist Jun Kazama has brought change to things, and the plot thickens with Heihachi’s return, determined to reclaim the throne and rid himself of Kazuya for good.

Compared to the first game, Tekken 2 offers a few more game modes for which the players can challenge and enjoy themselves further. The classic Arcade mode is still there, followed by the Versus mode, Team Battle mode, Time Attack mode, Survival mode, and Practice mode. All of the playable characters in the first game are available to be played as well as unlocked, in addition to the newcomers that are introduced in the story of this game.

As this game was literally developed and published only 1 year after its predecessor, the models and graphics are pretty much the same save for several new character models added. One of the interesting facts about Tekken 2 is that one of the new characters, Roger the Kangaroo, was originally a pet project for one of the development team members, but was later added into the game as a new unlockable character possibly due to its unique nature.

To sum it all up, Tekken 2 is still one of the most iconic and memorable fighting games from the 90s. Head on over to retrogames and play this one for free now.
